Central City —
Just a week ago Waverly was the No. 4 team in Class B with an 11-1 record.
On Saturday High Plains took down the mighty Viqueens in the first round of the Central City tournament with a 7-6 win.
The win, a real feather in the hat for the Storm who have seen many games get away from them this season leading to a 5-15 record, can use the momentum from this win for the rest of the year.
Waverly jumped to a 4-0 lead over the High Plains girls, but that didn’t phase the Polk County club as they continued to chip away at the Waverly advantage.
The Storm got three runs back in the third when Jamee Scherer drove in Ashley Fleming who had been hit by a pitch. Then with two outs, Thania Sanchez ripped a two-run single to make it 4-3.
The chipping continued as Cheyanne Schultz picked up an RBI single in the fourth to tie the score at 4-4.
High Plains took the lead in the fifth when Scherer walked and scored on Brooke Brown’s RBI single.
Waverly tied the game in the sixth at 5-5, and the two teams went to the seventh inning with time having expired. With the international rule in play, Becky Kobza started at second base and scored on Sanchez’s single.
High Plains then played a little small ball to load the bases and Whitney Engel made them pay with a slow roller to third that scored Sanchez for the 7-5 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Waverly was able to score one run, and had a runner at first with one out. On the delayed steal Fleming gunned down the runner with the tag applied by shortstop Haley Strobel.
Kobza, who went the distance scattering eight hits, struck out the final Waverly batter for the win.
High Plains knocked 12 hits and had five stolen bases.
Friend 4, High Plains 2
Friend pitcher Krista Jo Menke struck out 14 and the High Plains offense was shut down to just three hits as they dropped a two-run decision to the Friend Bulldogs.
Both of the Storm’s runs came in the sixth as did two of their three hits. Back to back doubles by Fleming and Schultz produced the first run and a stolen base by Schultz, who scored on a wild pitch.
Sierra Dittmer was on the mound for the Storm and she allowed seven hits, four earned runs and struck out two
Central City 7, High Plains 1
The Storm gave up six runs in the first two innings and that allowed Central City to coast the rest of the way.
The Storm finished with four hits and scored their only run of the game in the fifth when Engel had an RBI single to plate Amanda Kobza, who singled to get aboard.
Central City finished with nine hits and four High Plains errors only added to their headaches.
High Plains (5-17) will host Adams Central Tuesday night.
