York, NE —
The game was tied at 3-3 in the top of the third, it was anybody’s game, both teams were battling hard.
On a 2-1 pitch form York starter Logan Killion, Stromsburg-Osceola-Shelby junior Anthony Snyder seemed to hit the off switch for the Cornerstone Junior Gold, as his shot into the leftfield bleachers just two rows below the football press box, tracked about 390 feet and drove in three runs.
That was all the S.O.S. Juniors needed as they picked up the 9-3 win to move to an even 4-4 on the year.
In that same inning, Jacob Sempek added an RBI single for his third run batted in of the game.
It was Sempek in the top of the second that hit a big two-run double that gave the visitors from Polk County a 3-1 lead.
York had opened the game with an RBI single off the bat of Ryan Salsman to score Connor Zumpfe who got aboard on one six S.O.S. errors in the game.
In the bottom of the second the York team drew even when Nate Brackhan and Zumpfe came up with RBI singles to tie the game at 3-3.
In the top of the fourth, S.O.S. reliever Isaac Moore relieved starter Kyle LeSuer and only gave up two hits in four strong innings of work. Moore picked up the win as he struckout three York batters, walked two and never allowed a run.
York had their chances as the S.O.S defense allowed the Gold base runners in every inning, but the York team could not come up with the big hit. The Junior Gold stranded eight base runners to six for the visitors.
The Stromsburg-Osceola-Shelby team out hit the York boys 10-7 in the game. Along with Snyder who went 2-3 with three RBI, Sempek was 2-4 with three RBI and a double, while Seth Houdersheldt was 2-3 with a two bagger. Leading York Cornerstone Gold was Salsman with a 2-3 effort, Zumpfe was 1-4 with a run batted in, while Nate Brackhan was 1-3 and he also had a run batted in.
Coach Vicente Luevano was not available for comment after the game.
The York Cornerstone Junior Gold (4-4-1) play their fifth game in five days when they travel to Waverly Sunday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch start. The York Juniors start a tough stretch where they play their next five of seven games on the road, including the next four in a row.
