Hastings,NE —
The Nebraska Annual Shrine Soccer Classic is scheduled for this Saturday at the Osborne Sports Complex in Hastings Nebraska.
The girls are set to do battle at 11:00 a.m., followed by the boys game at 1:30 p.m..
York’s Alexa Staehr and Dax Becker both 2008 graduates, will be among the players on the North squad when the teams take the field this Saturday.
Both players view this as and honor and a privilege to be a part of and they both know they have people to thank.
“It means a lot to me, and it’s an honor to represent York High School in this game,” said Becker via phone interview. “I have been playing soccer for the past 13 years and it all started with my first coaches Stewart Sikes and David Odem who taught me a lot, then I played indoor soccer where Matt Coppinger was a big help to me, then in high school with both Rich Saxer and Stephen Sauter. These guys helped give me the tools to be as good as I am.”
just having returned from Seattle where he was visiting a cousin for his graduation, Becker plans to attend Iowa Western Community College and play soccer there.
Staehr also sees that her gifts came from the people who taught her the game.
“It was an honor to be selected. I was happy that the other coaches across the state thought that I was that good, because the team is selected by all the coaches in the state,” she explained. “ I really learned a lot from coach McBride (Darcy), and if it weren’t for her coaching I probably would have never had the opportunity to play in college or a game like this. I think it will be a lot of fun and it’s a great opportunity to play against the best soccer players in the state.”
Alexa is headed to Fremont in the fall and will be playing soccer at Midland College
