Jim Weeks, head coach at Beatrice High School, led the two-day camp in Stromsburg on Tuesday and Wednesday for grades 4-12. In total, 73 area kids attended either the morning or afternoon session of the camp.
On Tuesday, Weeks was about as high energy as a coach can get as he worked with the kids on their offensive game. Wednesday the kids no doubt got the same energy as Weeks worked with them on defense.
“We want to get them in here and smoke ‘em for two days,” Weeks said. “We want it to be an eye opener and to really take it to ‘em.”
Weeks not only brings high energy to the table, he offers immense knowledge of the sport, a great deal of experience and a resume that most other coaches can only dream of. Over the past 13 seasons, he has led the Orangemen to 11 state tournaments, ten final fours, two runner-up finishes and three state titles. All of this while competing in one of Class B’s toughest districts.
“He brings unbelievable knowledge of basketball,” Cross County head boys coach Bob Waltman said. “He’s been places we want our program to go and he encourages kids to want to get to that level.”
Waltman hopes that by bringing in someone from the outside it will help his program get to that level. Weeks agrees that it’s good for the kids to hear things from someone outside of the program to reach another level.
“I think when you bring somebody from the outside you get a different mindset,” Weeks said. “I think it helps take kids to another level.”
When that somebody is a coach like Jim Weeks, that different mindset will most definitely help kids get to another level. The kids who attended Weeks’ camp in Stromsburg no doubt got their money’s worth.
